Before and after
This is my Dad. He is 46 years old. In 2009 my Dad was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. After shrinking the tumor enough with chemo, they surgically removed the rest. They removed more than half of my father’s stomach and esophagus. My dad could not walk or eat solids for a month. After a couple more chemo treatments, by the septemeber of 2010 doctors said they had gotten rid of the cancer. In October of 2010 doctors had come to realize, the cancer had spread to his brain. They did not check this earlier because it is rare. Being in the brain, this was inoperable. They gave chemo to try minimize the size of the tumor, or to just keep it from growing larger. The tumor, located in his cerebellum, affected his walking, balance, and sight. While my Dad was well enough to walk with some restrictions, he would stretch on the floor, to strength what little muscle he had left. One day, he was doing so, my mom and I downstairs see him get on his knees in an odd fashion. I look over, i see him roll over, his eyes roll into the back of his head and he starts muttering weird things, then passes out. I believed i had just seen my father die. Doctors don’t know what caused this, but they believe he was just light headed, I don’t believe it. He spent a couple nights in the hospital then returned home. Over the next 3 month he received more chemo. His breathing and ability to walk became very bad over this time period. His breathing became so bad we had to be taken into the hospital once again. Two months ago my dad was diagnosed with Pneumonia. He stayed in the hospital for 2 weeks. Because of his pneumonia he has been unable to receive chemo since. About one month ago a clot in his left lung was discovered. He is now on a blood thinner. My Dad is now unable to walk, he every second of the day, except when he eats and goes to the bathroom, which is all provided for him in the living room which he never leaves. Now today, my grandparents were watching my Dad, because he can’t be left home alone. I was woken up by my grandmother coming into my room telling me my father has fallen again and needs help to get up. He falls all the time so i did not seem like a huge deal at the time. I go downstairs, ask him if he is alright and help him into his chair. Little did I know, my dad hit his head on the footrest, he hit it hard. My grandparents, being stupid, kept this from me, not wanting me to worry. But little did they know, he’s on a blood thinner. He has a softball sized black and blue bump on the back of his already misshapen head. This bump is filled with blood, right where the tumor is in his head. My father being in and out of the hospital a lot, refused to go to the hospital to get it checked, even though it looks really serious and dangerous to his health. I don’t want to lose my daddy. All i want in life is for him to walk me down the isle, walk, no wheelchair, no walker, nothing, his own two legs. I know that this is a lot to ask, because there is no way he could do that now and i see no chance of him getting better, I’m not sure he will even be able to attend my wedding. I love my daddy and cancer is killing him, if you look at the pictures about you can see how the life has been sucked out of him. He is smiling only because he knows it was a picture, other wise he would have had a messed up look upon his face. I just want my daddy back.
